Can You Get a False-Positive Pregnancy Test Result?

When a pregnancy test shows a positive result, it’s common to wonder about the accuracy of the reading. While home tests are generally reliable, certain factors like specific medications, recent medical conditions, or even the timing of the test can occasionally affect results. Understanding how these tests work can help explain why follow-up confirmation is an important step in determining what is actually happening.

At HeartReach Center, we provide a neutral setting to help verify pregnancy test results. We offer free pregnancy testing and ultrasounds to ensure that every individual has access to accurate data. Our center is a safe space to discuss the biological facts and address any questions about the testing process.

Accuracy is the foundation for your next steps. Reach out today to confirm your results with a lab-quality pregnancy test and ultrasound.

How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which appears in urine or blood shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. This typically occurs 6–10 days after conception, often around the time of a missed period. Because hCG levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy, the timing of the test plays an important role in accuracy.

Testing too early, using an expired test, or misreading results can occasionally cause confusion or inconsistent readings. While false-positive results are uncommon, they can occur, which is why confirmation, often through an ultrasound, is recommended.

What Can Cause a False-Positive Result?

A false-positive result occurs when a test indicates pregnancy even though a viable pregnancy is not present. Although rare, several factors can contribute, including:

  • Medications: Certain fertility treatments containing hCG or human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG), such as Metrodin, Pergonal, or Repronex
  • Medical conditions: Rare cancers, trophoblastic disease, ovarian cysts, or thyroid disorders
  • Early pregnancy loss (“chemical pregnancy”): When a fertilized egg briefly implants but does not continue to develop, producing small amounts of hCG without a viable pregnancy
  • Timing of reading the test: Reading results outside the recommended time window can result in faint or misleading lines

Because home pregnancy tests cannot confirm pregnancy location or viability, follow-up care in a healthcare setting is essential for obtaining accurate results and a complete medical picture.
