Finding Hope and Support for Pregnancy Decisions During the Holiday Season

Depending on your situation, the coming holidays either fill you with anticipation or dread. The holidays can be stressful in and of themselves, but adding an unexpected pregnancy can quickly become overwhelming.

The caring team at HeartReach offers a few tips to help you overcome the holiday blues. We know this can be an emotional time, and pregnancy hormones only add to the struggle. Let’s get through the holidays together.

If you need to speak with us immediately, please call us at (907) 373-3456 or schedule an appointment online. Safe and supportive care is just a phone call away.

Feel Free to Feel Awful

The holidays are a time to grant yourself freedom, particularly if you’re pregnant. Feel free to set boundaries on conversations and what activities you participate in. Let your family and friends know that you will decide if and when you wish to discuss your pregnancy decision.

Only you should determine if you feel well enough to attend a function. Symptoms of pregnancy include fatigue and nausea. You have every right to bow out of events if you’re tired or experiencing morning sickness.

Take Care of Your Mind and Body

Choosing how to handle an unexpected pregnancy is a significant decision. It can cause a lot of mental anguish and emotional stress. Practice self-care by doing the following:

  • Get the proper amount of sleep.
  • Eat healthy foods.
  • Get exercise with moderation.
  • Avoid any substance abuse, which can add to depression.
  • Seek professional counseling if necessary.

Enjoy What Small Pleasures You Can

Going on a walk with a friend, watching a silly holiday movie, or baking your favorite Christmas cookies are all ways to add joy to your life. Something as simple as lighting a special holiday candle or taking a warm bath can instantly change one’s mood.

If necessary, start a new tradition for this year. Make plans with trusted friends or family members. Consider volunteering some time to others.

You Are Not Alone

Facing an unexpected pregnancy and determining its outcome can feel isolating. However,

The American Psychological Association (APA) reports that 41% of U.S. adults experience increased stress during the holidays compared to any other time of the year.

Although misery loves company, you don’t need to invite it over for the holidays. Choose to spend time with supportive friends and family members. Ask for help if pregnancy symptoms like fatigue or nausea become too much.

We’re here for you, too. Consider talking with us before the upcoming holidays. You can schedule a no-cost, confidential appointment to discuss your concerns or receive no-cost pregnancy services, like STD testing and treatment.

Reach out to HeartReach for the care and support you need this holiday.
