If you are noticing changes in your body, early pregnancy symptoms and premenstrual symptoms can feel very similar. You may experience tiredness, mood changes, or breast tenderness with both.
There are some key differences between the two, however, which can help you understand what your body might be telling you.
If you suspect you might be pregnant or your period is late, HeartReach Center provides no-cost pregnancy testing and limited obstetric ultrasounds to confirm your pregnancy. We help you get the answers you need.

Why Both Symptoms Feel the Same
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and early pregnancy symptoms involve changes in your hormones, which means symptoms can overlap and often feel the same.
Common symptoms of both include:
- Breast tenderness
- Fatigue
- Mild cramping
- Bloating
- Changes in appetite
- Mood swings
This is why trying to figure out if you are pregnant based on symptoms alone isn’t accurate.
The Key Signs of Pregnancy
There are a few clear differences between PMS and early pregnancy symptoms that lean more towards pregnancy.
The first is a missed period; however, this may not be reliable if you have irregular periods.
Some other signs of early pregnancy include:
- Nausea with or without vomiting.
- Frequent urination due to increased kidney activity since the amount of blood in your body increases during pregnancy.
- Nasal congestion from hormonal changes.
- Light spotting, which is also known as implantation bleeding, occurs around 10-14 days after conception. Not all women have this, however.
It’s important to remember that some women experience strong pregnancy symptoms while others have none at all.
Therefore, the best way to determine whether you may be pregnant is by taking a pregnancy test, since this tells you if your body is producing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone associated with pregnancy. If the result is positive, an ultrasound can provide additional information, including how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is in the uterus, and whether the pregnancy is developing.
