How Long Should You Wait After a Missed Period to Take a Pregnancy Test?

Wait at Least One Day After Your Missed Period

For the most accurate result, it is recommended by the Mayo Clinic to wait one to two days after a missed period to take an at-home pregnancy test. 

A home urine pregnancy test works by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which rises after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. By waiting until at least one day after your missed period, hCG levels are more likely to be high enough for the test to detect.

For women with irregular periods, understanding when to take a pregnancy test can be confusing. In this case, it’s best to take a pregnancy test at least 21 days after you had unprotected sex.

If you think you may have received a false-negative result, repeat testing after a few days is recommended.

How to Get an Accurate Result 

While at-home pregnancy tests are up to 99% accurate when used correctly, not following the test instructions or using an expired test could cause inaccurate results. 

To get an accurate result, make sure you’re doing the following: 

• Use your first morning urine, since hCG levels are typically more concentrated.
• Read and follow the test instructions carefully. 
• Read the results within the recommended timeframe. 

What to Do If Your Test Is Positive 

If you receive a positive pregnancy test result, the next important step is confirming your pregnancy with a limited ultrasound.

A limited ultrasound will be able to tell you how far along you are, the location of the pregnancy, and whether the pregnancy appears to be developing. 

Knowing these medical details helps protect your health because an ultrasound can identify concerns such as an ectopic pregnancy or determine whether a miscarriage may have already occurred.
